Pope Leo XIII left us two prayers to St Michael, both composed in Latin at the end of the XIXth century. The short one — “St Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle…” — was added in 1886 to the prayers said at the foot of the altar after Low Mass, and was recited so until 1964. The long one, given on this page, opens the Exorcism against Satan and the apostate angels that he published in 1890.
Later on, Saint John Paul II, at the Regina Caeli of 24 April 1994, and Pope Francis, who in 2018 asked that every Rosary in October end with it, greatly encouraged the prayer to St Michael, and as a result, whole congregations, prayer groups and individuals kept the practice going, invoking daily St. Michael’s protection for the Church, families and all Christianity.
According to the story, the prayer was inspired by a terrifying and prophetic vision that Pope Leo XIII was allowed to see: a century of great spiritual warfare between the Church and the evil powers was to follow soon; the vision of fierce attacks on the Church and on Christianity compelled the Pope to write immediately this prayer, that he would himself recite every day in a powerful, unshaken voice. “What a horrible picture I was permitted to see!” Pope Leo is said to have declared.
This is an account handed down by tradition, not a document of the Pope himself. And the formula of exorcism proper, which follows in the rite, is not part of this prayer: it is reserved to priests authorised by the bishop.
Today, more than a hundred years since that terrible vision, it looks like not only that the battle continues, but it is today stronger than ever, as we all witness the relentless attacks against family and Christian values, morality and dignity of human life from conception to death, against the Church and the faith.
Now more than ever we all have to invoke the powerful protection of St. Michael the Archangel.
